The 2nd Amendment
The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms. Ratified in 1791 as part of the Bill of Rights, it has been a point of significant legal and cultural debate. Advocates argue it ensures the capacity for self-defense and deterring tyranny, whereas opponents contend it contributes to gun violence and undermines public safety.
This amendment has led to numerous court cases, including District of Columbia v. Heller (2008), which affirmed an individual's right to possess a firearm unconnected to service in a militia and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home.
